Was Jesus Defiled? Had He a Carnal Mind?

At a recent Bible lecture the speaker said, in the course of his address, that “Jesus was defiled,” and that “Jesus needed cleansing by baptism.” Other recent speakers have declared that “Jesus was corrupt,” and that “Jesus had a carnal mind.” I am not alone in wanting enlightenment on these very important points. I hope you will explain these statements in the Problems section of The Testimony.

These questions touch upon the nature of Jesus Christ, a subject on which there is much divergence of opinion. It is not our purpose in this section to take sides in this controversy; our only desire is to help our correspondent (and others similarly perplexed) towards a settled decision on the points raised by R. B. in his letter. Our observations, however, are not to be regarded necessarily as the views of The Testimony Committee, but as merely the tentative suggestions of the Problems Editor.

The speaker who asserted that “Jesus was denied'’ probably intended no more than to emphasise that Jesus partook fully of ordinary human physical nature. On this point Scripture teaching is clear and positive. Here are two out of many passages which could be cited.
