Facts Christians Should Know About The Bible’s “Canaanite Genocide"

[In Deuteronomy 20:17], God commanded the ancient Israelites to “utterly destroy” the Canaanites, among other peoples. And the disappearance of the the latter group from history suggested some truth to the story.

Fewer stories in the Bible create problems like the supposed Canaanite genocide creates. How could “God’s nation” completely slaughter an entire people group? How is it loving to one’s neighbor to kill all of them? Why would God make them do such a thing?

Unbelievers have asked such questions for years. A new genetic study, however, may force the skeptics to rethink their strategy, for scientists have recently discovered that the Canaanites were not wiped out after all.
