Commentary: Psalms 83

Asaph was a priest of Israel; as such, he composed songs or psalms. This 83rd Psalm is the last of a series written by Asaph beginning in Psalms 73. Its message is remarkably relevant to today, being surely meant to forecast the events which are about to be fulfilled.

Not only do all the nations round about Israel despise the Jewish State, they regularly issue fearsome threats upon the Jewish people and their state as well as physical assaults upon the Jewish people. Since Israel’s reestablishment, the nations and regions listed in this psalm have waged war against God’s People—to no avail, except to lose every contest, as well as much of their lands.

The conflicts now raging in the regions adjacent to Israel—and often even within Israel—appear to every decent man so heinous as to require the supernal judgments of the Almighty. But He has thus far only wrought judgment upon those vile enemies by the hand of Israel—divinely assisting His people to win each of its wars exceptionally swiftly (except the War of Israeli Independence of 1948, which ended in a truce some 14 months after it began).
