Egypt occupies the northeast corner of Africa. It is dominated by the River Nile. Over ninety per cent of the population live in the Nile river valley and delta. The country is the second most populous country in Africa, with only Nigeria having more people.
The Egyptians were descended from Mizraim (the Hebrew word for Egypt), who was a son of Ham: “And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan” (Genesis 10:6). Egypt developed into a great ancient power, but its greatness was already in decline by the time the Israelites fled from Egypt under Moses.
It was the invasion by Nebuchadnezzar which, from a Biblical perspective, marked a turning point in the history of Egypt. Ezekiel, in a series of seven prophecies (chapters 29-32), spoke about the punishment of Egypt by Nebuchadnezzar. In one of these prophecies he also spoke about the status of Egypt after the invasion and captivity had finished: “and I will bring again the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation; and they shall be there a base kingdom. It shall be the basest of the kingdoms; neither shall it exalt itself any more above the nations: for I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule over the nations,” (Ezekiel 29:14-15). History testifies to the truth of this prophecy, and it is a key to understanding the role of Egypt in the last days. Egypt has never been able to recapture the greatness of its ancient past.
