And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:42-43)
This well-known incident is quoted to support the theological tradition that the righteous enter into their reward at the instant of death. The passage in question affords no proof of this. The Lord Jesus did not say, “Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise”; but, “Verily I say unto thee to-day, Thou shalt be with me in Paradise,” which is a distinction with a great difference, although only a comma is moved.
