Who Was Job's Satan?

“There was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.” (Job 1:6)

Who was Job’s “Satan”? Many attempts have been made to answer this question, without however satisfying all the questioners, and we cannot hope that our present attempt will be any more successful. Still, something may be gained by examining the problem afresh.

Perhaps the first point requiring mention is that in the Hebrew text the word satan (small “s”) signifies “adversary” or “the adversary.” We are therefore to understand that one of the “sons of God” was an adversary of Job.
