George Joseph Laurer developed the Universal Product Code in 1973. As an engineer at IBM, he was asked to develop the pattern used for the Universal Product Code. Over the years, many conspiracy theorists see in the UPC code the “mark of the beast” mentioned in Revelation 13:18.
For many years Laurer maintained a “frequently asked questions” page at his personal web site that addressed the concerns about the number “666” and the UPC. He removed the page circa 2015, from which the following questions and answers were obtained:
