Why Did Jesus Cast Out the Madness into the Swine?

Question: Why did Jesus cast out the madness of Legion into the swine? Having in mind the character of the Master, we find difficulty in associating such an action with Jesus unless there was some lesson behind it.

Answer: The immediate reason for the transfer of the madness from the man to the swine was that the man requested such a transfer, but it is useless to seek an explanation of the desires of a lunatic. It is difficult, too, to explain why Jesus sanctioned the apparently wanton destruction of 2,000 swine in view of the silence of the Gospel writers on the point.
