In the enumeration by Moses of the strong nations with whom the Israelites had to contend, “which also were accounted giants,” there is the following interesting reference to the early pioneer work of the Philistines in South Canaan:—
“And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah (Gaza) the Caphtorims (Philistines), which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them and dwelt in their stead.”
Now Goliath was one of these relics of primitive days, and we think his father is mentioned in the text of 2 Samuel 21:22 as “the giant in Gath.”
