The Pharisee and the Publican

“This man went down to his house justified rather than the other.”

As in many of the doctrinal statements of Christ, the circumstances which called forth the sayings lend a clue to their correct interpretation, so it is with the parable, the telling of which is recorded in Luke 18:10-14.

Jesus had been discussing prayer, and had spoken the parable of the importunate widow and the unjust judge. He then proceeded to direct his remarks against those who trust in themselves that they are righteous and despise others.
