A Loaf of Bread

While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread (artos), and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.—Matthew 26:26 NRS

In the biblical texts, the terms [Hebrew] lechem and [Greek] artos are used generically of all breads, whether leavened or otherwise. The terms matzah and azumos, however, refer exclusively to unleavened bread. Understanding the distinction between these terms and how they are used is important for understanding the biblical testimony.
