Judgement in the Air?

“…to meet the Lord in the air.” (1 Thessalonians 4:17)

What is the context of this unusual phrase? Verse 16 speaks of the resurrection of dead believers. Verse 17 follows by saying: “Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them (the resurrected believers) in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air.” The word “meet” suggests that believers (living and resurgent dead alike) will rise into the air to meet Jesus on his way from Heaven to earth, and accompany him to the judgment seat.
