Probability Approaches Zero

“Materialism has substituted magic for sober thought. The whole process of evolution becomes a succession of miracles without intelligible ground in the process. The appearance in a world of chance of any order at all, the emergence of life with its series of forms and organs, the final appearance of intelligence and a sense of beauty—all are miracles.”1

This may seem a remarkable statement from the pen of a sober scientist. Is it possible that biologists are so credulous a people as to believe in tales akin to the myths of former days? Strange to relate, it is more than a possibility—it is a fact! Scientists, no less than laymen, have trodden the path of illogical credulity and have cheerfully jumped the gates of reason which barred their way. They have wandered at will amid a fairyland of their own devising. The great Dutch botanist, Dr. J. P. Lotsy, declared in 1916:—

“Phylogeny, i.e., reconstruction of what has happened in the past, is no science, but a product of fantastic speculations. . . . Those who know that I have spent a considerable part of my life in efforts to trace the phylogeny of the vegetable kingdom, will know that this is not written down lightly; nobody cares to destroy his own efforts.”2
