The Difference Between the Baptisms of John and of Jesus

Would you please explain the difference between “The Baptism of John” and “The Baptism of Jesus Christ”?

The subject is conveniently introduced by the record in the Acts of the Apostles, which shows us certain persons for the moment perplexed by this very question. It was a “transition” period. The “name of Jesus” had but recently been perfected and revealed as the means of approach to the Father, and hence the main desideratum of those days was to “shew from the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ” (Acts 18:28). Apollos the Alexandrian, “an eloquent man and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus… and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.” But Aquila and Priscilla “took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly” (verses 24–26). That is, they explained to him that Jesus of Nazareth, to whom John had borne testimony, had been “crucified and slain,” and “raised up” from the dead by God (Acts 2:23–32); and that remission of sins was thenceforth proclaimed “in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:44–47). Thus enlightened, Apollos set forth with an enlarged and powerful testimony.
