A Woman Built

“And the LORD built of the tzela that He took from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man.” (Genesis 2:22)

What is the “tzela”? The original Adam was an androgynous being, one side male and the other side female. The LORD separated the sides by taking the “tzela,” the female side, and fashioning it into its own entity—(Rashi, Ibn Ezra). Alternatively, the “tzela” that the LORD took from Adam was one of his ribs. Thus, the LORD formed the bones, sinews and flesh around the rib to create woman—(Radak, Sephoreno).
