Matthew 28:19 . . . describes the Risen Lord as saying to His disciples, ‘Go ye and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.’ If it were undisputed, this would, of course, be decisive, but its trustworthiness is impugned on the grounds of textual criticism, literary criticism, and historical criticism.
The objection made to the authenticity of Matthew 28:19 from the standpoint of historical criticism is that the references to baptism in the Acts point to the earliest form as baptism “in the name of the Lord.” Thus it is not, like the previous objections, directed against the command as a whole, but against the formula used in it.
