Parshat Acharei Mot: Discipline and Reflection After the Deaths of Nadab and Abihu

After they fled Egypt, sometimes bad stuff happened in the Sinai desert for the Israelites. When it did, God demanded discipline. In Acharei Mot (Leviticus 16:1 to 18:30), Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, together do some really bad stuff, and they are fatally disciplined by God. After the death (literally in Hebrew: “acharei mot”) God demanded future discipline on the part of Aaron’s sons, the priests, and sends the Israelites a bunch of heavy-duty rules to reflect on.
