The Personification of Light

Question: Has God made provision for enlightening every man that cometh into the world, or has his privilege been strictly confined to believers now?

Answer: The question appears to suggest verse 9 of John ch. 1: “This is the light that lighteneth every man that cometh into the world.”

This passage cannot be separated from its context, for it is used by the Apostle in connection with his discussion of the “logos.” “Logos” is an idea which was developed in Greek philosophy, and originated with Heraclitus of Ephesus; thence it was incorporated into the philosophy of the Stoics, and finally was utilised by Philo of Alexandria. To this last-mentioned philosopher, “logos” meant the sum of all the divine activities in the world; e.g. the power and activity of creation, of sustaining life and being, and the power and activity of saving the human race.
