Unitarianism Defined: The Personality and Deity of the Holy Ghost

I come now to the main theme of the present Lecture, viz: The Personality and Deity of the Holy Ghost. And, to begin, what is precisely this doctrine of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, which Unitarians reject? In the 5th of the thirty-nine “Articles of Religion” of the Protestant Episcopal Church, we read, that, “The Holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty, and glory with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God;” conformably with the 1st Article: “In unity of the Godhead, there be three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.”

In the 3rd sect, of the 2nd chap, of the Presbyterian Confession of Faith, we have really the same statement, closing with—“the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son.” In the Athanasian Creed, it is said: “There is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal… In this Trinity none is afore or after other, none is greater or less than another. But the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal.” In the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed: “I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets.”

It will be seen at once that there are two branches of the doctrine as thus stated; the first, Personality, making the Holy Ghost a Person; the second, Deity, making it God. To sustain the popular or orthodox belief it must he proved, then, that the Holy Ghost is a Person. But, not to quibble about the impropriety and unnaturalness of attributing without proof personality to that, which both in Greek and English is named by nouns in the neuter gender,1 how is its personality supposed to be proved?
