Many Mansions: Understandest Thou What Thou Readest?

“In my Father’s house are many mansions...” (John 14:2)

This saying of Jesus is generally taken to mean that in Heaven there is room for all who have lived a good life here on the earth. There is an alternative interpretation, favoured in certain quarters, that Jesus here taught that there are different degrees of reward in Heaven, different planes of existence, different degrees of happiness. There does not seem to be any warrant in the text itself for either of these views.

The Greek word translated “mansions” in our Authorised Version occurs again in verse 23 of this same chapter (John 14), where it is translated “abode”.
