Our articles on Satan1 aroused considerable interest, and, as might be expected of an unorthodox point of view, a certain amount of criticism.
This is to be welcomed, for only by an exchange of opinion can we prove all things in order to “hold fast that which is good”.
It is interesting to notice the tenacity with which many cling to the belief in a personal superhuman devil. If their belief in his existence be the result of Bible study, the tenacity is commendable; but when an alternative explanation of the Bible references can be presented we might be excused for expecting that it would have its attractions, and induce a sympathetic consideration of evidence calculated to relieve the mind from a horrifying idea.
