“Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings?” (Luke 12:6)
In Matthew 10:29 Jesus is reported as saying that two sparrows were sold for a farthing. A comparison of Matthew 10:29 with Luke 12:6 reveals very forcibly how little value was placed on sparrows in the market places of Palestine in the 1st Century. A customer could buy two sparrows for a farthing; [and] if he asked for two farthing’s worth, [then] an extra sparrow was “thrown in [for free],” and he got five sparrows for his two farthings.
