Philosophical Concept of the Logos

The concept of the Logos is clearly important to John. John’s Logos closely parallels Wisdom in the Old Testament, but he would most likely also have been aware of Philo’s concept of the Logos. Perhaps he meshed the two concepts together.

In the Old Testament, Wisdom was created before the rest of creation, God’s first act of creation (Proverbs 8:22-29; cf. Romans 8:29). Wisdom was beside God, like his master builder, in whom God took daily delight from Wisdom’s rejoicing before him of his creation (Proverbs 8:30-31; cf. John 1:1; Acts 2:33; 7:55-6; Romans 8:34). Wisdom offers bread and wine as a mark of seeking knowledge and insight (Proverbs 9:5-6; cf. Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:17-19; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25).
